If you do not clean up your hard drive regularly, you can accumulate massive numbers of files which may cripple your system. Your computer will work slower and errors or crashes will be more frequent. There are numerous cleanup utilities on the market, but many of them may not include certain features or some of them may not work as well as you expect to. FileCleaner combines the strengths of similar applications and the weaknesses of none. It is free, easy to use and it is capable of removing junk files left behind by various applications, web browsers or the system itself.

FileCleaner works on Windows XP, Vista and Win 7, without asking for too many resources. The only setting you need to make, during the setup process, is to select a destination folder. There are multiple steps to go through, but you can just click the Next button until the wizard starts to install the software's components.

Browser, application or Windows files can be erased in different sections, on FileCleaner's interface. You can analyze and clean all browsers at the same time or perform the same task and target history or cache files, cookies, saved passwords and more, on individual browsers. The software will detect your installed browsers automatically and it will display options for each of them, on its interface. The supported browsers are Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari.

The utility will detect your installed applications as well. It lets you clean up torrent clients, toolbars, archive programs, instant messengers, players, Office settings and more. You can target applications just by clicking their check boxes. FileCleaner supports numerous applications, but it does not display check boxes for all of them. It shows only the ones that are installed on your computer. The program is also capable of deleting recent document entries, temporary files, your search history and other non critical data. These items can be selected on the Windows page, where you may also enable or disable a user tracking and a page file cleaning feature.

One of FileCleaner's unique features is the real time cleaner. If enabled, the software will automatically clean up your browsers and instant messengers when you close them. Additionally, the software allows you to select individual applications for this feature. Another useful tool is the file shredder. All that it requires is to add files to a list and to click a button to delete them. Besides deleting the added data, FileCleaner will also overwrite it, so it can never be recovered.
